Cake decorating takes a certain skill… that I don’t have. And, if you’re like me, you’re not going to want to take a birthday cake to your child’s party if it looks like your child is the one who made it, no matter how good it actually tastes.
And the time! I all but go insane when I think about everything I could accomplish in the time it takes me to decorate a cake (especially if I’ve made a disastrous mistake – usually at the very end).
I know I can’t be alone in this struggle, so in the name of making our cakes look as good as they taste, I’ve rounded up five amazingly easy birthday cake decorating ideas for you all!
1. Cover it with Cookies!
I just can’t get over how adorable this animal cookie birthday cake from A Subtle Revelry is! You don’t have to limit yourself to these pink and white frosted treats though! Grab a pack of your favorite cookies, frost your creation, and stick ’em on!
2. Sprinkles, Sprinkles, Everywhere
Whose eyes don’t light up at the sight of a confetti covered confection? Sprinkles are not only a classic cake covering (okay, I’ll cool it on the alliterations), but they’re super fun! If you need a little instruction, Oh Happy Day can help you out with two easy methods.
3. Keep it Playful
This one is perfect for the last minute. Just make a quick pit stop at the closest toy store – or Dollar Tree! – and pick up an inexpensive pack of theme-appropriate miniatures. If you do have an extra minute to spend on this, you can make it extra fun like this wild animal cake featured at Kara’s Party Ideas. (Click here for a how-to on making party hats for your plastic animals!)
4. Sugar Rush
Kids love candy. It also comes in about every color and shape imaginable! You can always use the cookie idea and encompass your entire cake with some sort of wacky candy, but I think getting creative and using candy to make a simple design is a great idea. Check out this Jelly Belly Flower Cake over at Glorious Treats for some sweet inspiration!
5. Don’t Bother
Sometimes the easiest way to do something is to not do it. Naked cakes are all the rage right now and they’re super simple to put together. You’ve seen them all over Pinterest at this point, I’m sure. Just layer your cake and throw some fresh fruit, or even flowers on top. My Frugal Adventures has an easy step by step on how to make sure your naked cake is on point!
