Everyone knows I adore bright, flashy makeup. Bold colors and eye-catching sparkle have always been the first things I reach for when getting dolled up. These days, though, I like to have an arsenal of easy, everyday makeup tricks – and products that are easy to use – for the days I don’t have a lot of time to spend on my makeup – which, as a mom, is most days.
It’s getting 🎤hot, hot, hot here in Tucson and the last thing I want to do now is load up my face with a bunch of heavy makeup that will probably just melt away in a few minutes.
Like most moms, I also don’t have lots of extra money to spend on cosmetics. That’s why I’m crazy about drugstore products. I don’t have to break the bank on mascara, and many inexpensive brands rival their pricier counterparts. It’s also easier if I can grab eyeliner and diapers without stopping at two different stores.
E.l.f Cosmetics are perfect for any busy lady on a budget. They’re easy to find, super affordable, and most products are great quality! E.l.f. proves that more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better. They are hit-or-miss, but most products I use are under $5 (most of those are even under $3!) and the hits are pretty impressive. With e.l.f. it’s easy to enhance my natural beauty and stick to my budget! 💃
When I’m looking for something new, I usually check out e.l.f. Cosmetics first. So when elfcosmetics.com offered free shipping and a free gift set – with the face palette I’ve wanted to try forever – with a $25 purchase last month, I took advantage. My makeup bag needed an (inexpensive) summer update and I wanted to help all of y’all bring your best face forward while saving money! Cha-ching! 🤑
So, here are my everyday makeup e.l.f. picks and my favorite ways to use them. Now, I don’t use all of these products every day. I like to mix and match, depending on the look I’m going for and how much time I have.
When I’m doing my makeup, I start with my eyes. It makes it easier to clean up mistakes and fallout without worrying about ruining the rest of my makeup. 👍 (And with e.l.f.’s Makeup Remover Pen ($3), fixing even the tiniest errors is a breeze!)
Even though I have full, blonde eyebrows, I’m determined to keep them natural and low-maintenance. E.l.f.’s Eyebrow Treat & Tame ($3) is my latest makeup crush. 💓 Just a couple swipes of the ‘tame’ end and I have pretty, natural-looking eyebrows! It’s like magical mascara for my brows! The formula is surprisingly lightweight combing through, then it dries to keep things in place. I love how easy it is to use! The fibers lightly fill in my brows and the color makes them subtly darker for full eyebrows that don’t look too bold against my fair skin and hair.
After filling in my eyebrows, I use the Shape & Stay Wax Pencil ($2) to tame any tricky hairs. I can’t use this over my whole eyebrow, otherwise, it looks waxy. However, it is colorless – making it perfect for any hair or skin color!
Most people don’t know that I have a birthmark on my right eyelid. It’s just one of the many quirks that make me, me. But, because of this, eye primer makes a huge difference in my everyday makeup game. My lids are also a bit oily, so it’s actually more of a must-have if I want my eyeshadow lasting more than an hour. For extra staying power, I use my face powder, paper napkins, coffee filters, blotting papers, whatever I have around, to mattify my eyelids pre-primer.
E.l.f.’s Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer ($2) is amazing! My eyeshadow really lasts all day with it! It comes in two colors: pearl (great for bold colors) and sheer. The sheer actually nude in color with a sheer finish, but it’s perfect for keeping my everyday eyeshadow in place for hours on end!
For every day, I love a nude/natural eye look. It’s easy to do and makes my eyes look bigger and brighter. Plus it’s easy to add fun pops to (like a swipe of colored eyeliner, brighter blush, or extra highlighting ✨). I have a couple different go-to looks, depending on how much time I have and where I’m going.
Each of e.l.f.’s Flawless Eyeshadow ($2) palettes contains four beautifully coordinated colors – and each shade is labeled so you know exactly which area each one is meant for. Doesn’t get much easier than that, folks! The colors in the Beautiful Browns palette aren’t exactly bold, but that works for natural, everyday makeup looks. I like to apply the ‘base’ color to my inner eyelids and under my brow bone. Then I blend the ‘lid’ and ‘crease’ colors accordingly, finishing the look by using a liner brush to dust my lower lashes with the ‘line’ color. Gorgeous in five minutes!
The lightest duo in the Day to Night Smoky 4 Piece Eye Set ($5) is a great two-step look for when I’m pressed for time or want a more subtle eye look. I use the lighter shade on my lids with the deeper color in my creases for light, natural definition. I use the lightest shadows for my fair skin – I’d love to see how the other shades work on darker skin! (This set would be great for a minimalist makeup bag I think.) The powders are smooth and rich in texture, unfortunately, with some fall out – I just try to make sure not to overload my brush with powder.
Most days, I wear nude eyeliner on my bottom waterline to make my eyes look more awake and fresh. Other than that, eyeliner is optional for my everyday makeup.
E.l.f.’s Brightening Eyeliner Pencil ($1) in Coffee is a good, normal eyeliner. I like to use this pencil to line my upper lash line before I apply eyeshadow. I still get definition around my eyes, it just blends the eyeliner in for a softer, more natural look. This is the only eyeliner I’ve used that I don’t have to pull my eyelid taught to apply! 🙌
I prefer the Shimmer Eyeliner Pencil ($1) in Black Bandit when I need a bolder liner. This pencil isn’t quite as soft as the other one, but it is richer in pigment and has better staying power. The shimmer is very subtle, but that makes it better for everyday makeup. I usually use this one for winged eyeliner using this easy, brilliant trick! ↯ (This completely changed my eyeliner game!)
Another quick and easy way I make my eyes look more awake is by highlighting the inner corners. I do this with the ‘glow’ end of e.l.f.’s Eyeliner & Shadow Stick ($3) in Pearl/Glow, applying it directly then blending it in with my fingers or a brush.
This 3-in-1 Mascara ($3) is great for a fresh, natural look. I like to use it when I’m wearing little to no other makeup. Although it does not give my fine, fair lashes the volume they need, the length and definition from this mascara are great! It’s special shaped brush and tiny precision bristles make it super easy to apply, so it’s terrific for those times I’m running out the door and only have time for a quick swipe of mascara. Most days, though, (especially if I’m wearing eyeliner) I want more volume and drama it in my lashes. It seems to be water-resistant, so I wouldn’t want to wear it every day anyway.
I’m not much of a lipstick girl – I certainly don’t wear it with my everyday makeup. I absolutely hate having to worry about it rubbing off all weird and I don’t like the way most lipsticks make my lips feel. When I pick out a lip color, I gravitate towards stains, tinted balms, products that are lightweight, look natural, and won’t make me look crazy if/when they start to fade off. I also usually need a lip product I can apply quickly and without a mirror!
Unfortunately, I have yet to find an e.l.f. lip color that I like with my everyday makeup. 😢 Their tinted lip balm is dry, my stain fades in a matter of minutes, the lip color pencils are never color I expect them to be, and their glosses are… just ok. Fingers crossed that e.l.f. Cosmetics steps up their lip color game soon! 🤞🤞
I do love their Lip Exfoliator ($3) though! No matter what, if anything, you put on your lips, exfoliating will make them look 10 times better. I get smoother, softer lips in a matter of minutes with this sugary sweet lip scrub. Lipstick form keeps it mess-free and it smells so lovely! 😍
Especially during the summer, I like to keep my face as fresh as possible. Getting all sweaty under a layer of makeup sounds – and feels – absolutely terrible and it will make me break out all kinds. I like to use a mattifying primer to give the rest of my makeup something to hold to (alas, I do not recommend e.l.f primers either 😞). Then light foundation and concealer + powder just where I need it to even out any redness before continuing.
I am obsessed with e.l.f.’s Beautifully Bare Naural Glow Face Palette ($8)! It comes with a beautiful highlighter, bronzer, and two lovely blushes. The colors are very soft – perfect for giving my fair skin a subtle, natural glow! 💯 I like to blend the bronzer into my hairline and along my jaw, to add some warmth to my face, and a blush into the apples of my cheeks. Then I use a highlighting brush to pat the highlighter on top of my cheekbones. The powders’ smooth finish and “ambient” (versus sparkly) glow make this palette excellent for everyday makeup!
Lastly, I use e.l.f.’s Daily Brush Cleaner ($3) to keep my favorite everyday makeup brushes clean between washes. It only takes a few extra seconds to spray on and wipe off and I feel better know I’m reaching for a clean brush every day!
What are your favorite e.l.f. products? (I’m also loving the e.l.f. Facial Massager ($4)! Check it out! ❤)
